As early as 1727, a professorship for economics, police and chamber affairs was established for the first time at a German university in Halle and the study of economic topics was taken up. Later, Halle's scholars made the university famous in Germany and far beyond with their achievements in the field of economics. These include Ludwig Heinrich Jakob, a co-founder of finance, as well as Gustav Schmoller and Johannes Conrad, two leading members of the "Verein für Socialpolitik" founded in Halle in 1872, a scientific association to which most economics and numerous business administration professors in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland still belong today. Erich Gutenberg, who received his doctorate in Halle in 1921, was one of the pioneers of business administration who began his academic career in Halle.
On 7 June 1951, an independent Faculty of Economics was founded, later known as the "Department of Economics". In 1991, under the leadership of the founding dean Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Gerhard Schmitt-Rink, the reorganisation of the faculty began. It was re-established on 5 November 1993.
Today, the Department of Economics is building on its traditions. It offers a modern and internationally oriented education in economics in six Bachelor's degree programmes and seven Master's degree programmes. The academic profile is characterised by the close integration of business administration, economics and business informatics with a focus on the areas of economic governance, financial governance, business and IT governance. These are the three competence centres of the Business and Economics department, where solutions for the economy of tomorrow are designed today.
